The City Lake of Madison was completed in 1970 for three intended purposes: One, to provide a potable water supply for the City of Madison. Two, to provide flood control for the area. And three, to provide basic recreational facilities for the community. 
Located one mile south and one mile west of Madison, the lake is a wonderful place for camping and fishing. Fish in the 114 acre lake include catfish, walleye, bass, and crappie. The lake consists of two shelter houses, a designated swimming area, boat ramp, fish cleaning station, docks, and numerous picnic areas and fishing coves.
Kansas Wildlife and Parks biologists monitor the stock within the lake and provide information regarding further growth and expectations.
The following rules and regulations have been established as a basis for control and preservation of the City Lake area so that the present and future users of the lake may better enjoy its recreational potential. All of the users of the lake and surrounding area are requested to do their part in obeying the following rules and regulations.
The City Council contracts with the Lake Caretaker who is authorized to take necessary action to assist in enforcing laws and regulations, as well as Greenwood County law enforcement officers and officers of Kansas Wildlife and Parks, who by virtue of positions, are empowered to patrol the lake area.
